FAQs

What you’ll find here is everything you need to know about VO₂ max testing at Hooke Fitness—how to prepare, what happens during the test, safety measures, interpreting your results and next-step recommendations. If there are any other questions, just let our team know.

How should I prepare for the session?

Getting the best results starts before you arrive.

To ensure the test captures a true and useful picture of your physiology, we recommend a few simple preparations:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise the day before.
  • Fast for at least 4 hours before your appointment (water is fine).
  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol 4 hours prior.
  • Wear comfortable workout clothes and trainers.
Who is this testing for?

This is for anyone interested in getting a current assessment of their key longevity fitness metrics and optimise their long-term health — from high-performing executives and fitness enthusiasts to those looking to safeguard their independence later in life.

Is the testing safe?

Yes. All tests are non-invasive and supervised by highly trained experts. We’ll ask you to complete a health screening form beforehand to ensure suitability.

How often should I repeat the test?

We recommend repeating the full assessment annually, or every 6 months if you are actively training or implementing significant lifestyle changes.

What if I’m not very fit right now?

That’s okay — this is a starting point. We adjust each test to your current ability level and provide realistic recommendations suited to your baseline.

What is Longevity Fitness Testing?

Longevity Fitness Testing is a multi-dimensional evaluation designed to assess the physical characteristics most closely linked to long-term health, vitality, and independence. The tests we conduct aren’t just performance metrics — they are indicators backed by decades of research correlating body composition and physical fitness with reduced mortality risk, lower disease incidence, and extended quality of life.

Your Testing Includes:

Body Composition

Analysis of muscle mass, visceral fat and total bodyfat mass, to help identify metabolic risk.

VO₂ Max

Gold-standard measurement of aerobic capacity — the single strongest predictor of cardiovascular health and longevity.

Grip Strength

A quick, reliable proxy for overall strength and a powerful predictor of future health outcomes and mortality risk.

Balance Assessment

Determines stability and neuromuscular control — key factors in fall prevention and preserving mobility into later life.

Press-Ups Test

A practical measure of upper-body muscular endurance, linked to cardiovascular health and functional strength.

What to Expect During the Test

Testing takes place at our private longevity lab in Mayfair — a quiet, fully-equipped space designed for personalised, data-driven assessments.

After a brief discussion with our fitness experts about the tests you will undertake, a comprehensive warm up will be completed and you will be ready to start your testing. The tests performed as part of the Longevity Fitness Testing protocol are both maximal and sub-maximal output tests, that will challenge several different fitness parameters.

This assessment is essential for fitness enthusiasts and those interested in using their training to optimise their performance and healthspan.

The full session lasts 60 minutes, including setup, testing, cooldown.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Each of these markers has been independently linked to longevity and health outcomes in peer-reviewed research. Together, they offer a comprehensive picture of your physiological age and potential health trajectory.

(01)

A higher VO₂ Max is correlated with a significantly reduced risk of heart disease, dementia, and all-cause mortality.

(02)

Strong grip strength predicts lower risk of disability, chronic disease, and early death.

(03)

Good balance reduces the risk of falls, a leading cause of injury-related mortality in older adults.

(04)

Muscular endurance, captured through press-ups, is linked to lower cardiovascular risk.

This is not just fitness testing — it’s a healthspan diagnostic designed for anyone serious about living better, for longer.

What You’ll Receive

After your session, you’ll receive:

  • A personalised report detailing your:
    • VO₂ Max score and comparison to population norms, identification of your fat-burning and carbohydrate-crossover thresholds, five clearly defined and personalised training zones
    • Body composition profile and implications for healthspan/lifespan
    • Grip strength, balance and press-up performance scores with a comparison to population standards relative to age and gender norms
